An older age

The Ferry Song, at the hub, long ago

The Ferry Song is set in a much older age, when the rowers at the hub forgot their song and the canoes went round in circles. A boy called Oar found three verses and sang it at first light. The ferries ran again.

The ferry song went out of the rowers overnight. By morning the canoes were turning in circles and the Hollow was eating the paths.

Oar, a river-town child who held Water from his mother, went after it. On the way he gained Sound, in the drum, and Light, in Mother Lamp's lamp, which shows what is and not what seems. He gathered three verses and sang the song at first light, and the ferries ran.

So drift has happened before. The present drift is the return of something the country once lived through, and recovered from.

The Ferry Song is set in that much older age, at the hub. It doesn't have to match the present stories' dates, names or colours.
