The drift

How the rites wore down

The drift is how the old rites slowly wore down after the Amaso line left in the 1890s. Nobody stopped on purpose. Small mistakes were passed down, like three jars becoming one, and in each village one element was lost.

Nobody lapsed. The terms moved under them, one generation at a time. When the Amaso line left in the 1890s, the channel went dry, though nobody shut it. From then on, each village wore its rites down at its own pace.

The drift is a change handed down as if it were the original: "that is how she heard it." The wrong hour. The wrong number. Three jars become one. The language still passes, so a drifted rite sounds right and pays nothing.

In every village, the element that died was the village's second, the one its pact was made with, and a virtue went with it. The Called are coming home to carry each one back.
