Who keeps a village

Elders, priests, the Post and the Lord's priest

A village is kept by its elders, its priests and its Post. A priest has to be recognised by people and spirits together. In hard times, the Posts lead the nation.

An elder is anyone who has been tested, whatever they hold: one element, or a pair nobody ever recognised.

Every village needs at least one priest of each true pair. Holding the pair isn't enough. A priest has to be recognised at the second crossing, by people and spirit together.

The Post holds the village's own pair and acts the way the village's presences act. It's a different job, not a higher rank. In times of strife, the Posts lead the nation.

The Lord's priest is an office of its own, one for each Lord: the single priest who speaks for the village's Lord. When people say a village went a hundred years without a priest, that's the one they mean.
